Water supply in the Varaždin County and the nitrate problem
Sažetak
The regional water supply system of the Varaždin County supplies the population of 150, 000. The annual water consumption is 10.5 million cu.m. The system uses ground water from the alluvial aquifer. The nitrate content in one of the wellfields exceeds the concentration allowed by the Drinking Water Standard (DWS), and on two other wellfields the concentrations are considerable below that level. The municipal company managing the public water supply system applies the process of mixing of water with various nitrate concentrations, achieving the concentration in the water delivered to the consumers of 8.8 NO3-N (mg/l), which is below the DWS limit. It is necessary to implement strictly the prescribed measures of sanitary protection of the wellfield.
