The paper investigates the influence of nitriding of the inner bearing ring NTN 1R30X35X17 mounted into the NTN NK35/20RCT outer ring with needles on its acoustic and vibration characteristics. The inner rings of the needle bearing are characterized by measuring hardness and surface roughness after nitriding. The A-V characteristics of samples nitrided in plasma at 450 °C, 480 °C and 500 °C and salt bath nitrocarburized in TENIFER process at 580 °C are compared, at a rotation speed of 945 rpm without lubrication. The acoustic characteristic of the needle bearing was recorded by measuring the intensity and waveform of the sound produced by the rotation of test samples without a load. In the computer program Audicity, a Fast Fourier Transformation analysis was performed, which determined the characteristic frequencies and intensity of the sound emitted by the rotation of the bearings. The vibration test was carried out with a Schut VM-6360 vibrometer by measuring acceleration and displacement of bearings. The results of A-V measurements showed a significant influence of the choice of process and nitriding temperature of the inner ring on noise, vibrations and heating of the bearing during operation. The analysis of the surfaces of the nitrided rings after the bearing rotation test revealed the appearance of wear by the surface fatigue mechanism, adhesion and abrasion. The results of the tribological analysis confirmed the surface wear on the bearing rings predicted by the appearance of high sound frequencies in the acoustic record and the increase in the value of vibration parameters on the unmodified ring, which was the most worn.
