Sažetak

Considering the evidently planned expansion of hydrogen production and the integration of capacity in an increasing number of sectors, the need for a more efficient and economical combination of production and consumption is an increasing priority in the planning of hydrogen strategies of various countries. Hydrogen can be found within pipeline networks as a homogeneous gas or as a component of a mixture with natural gas. In both cases, there are specific benefits and challenges that must be considered, primarily related to the properties of pure hydrogen and its interaction with methane in the mixture, as well as the operating parameters of the pipeline. With the aim of adapting as quickly as possible to the upcoming requirements for gas transportation through the existing infrastructure, it is initially necessary to examine commercially available paint products whose properties would potentially enable the transport of the desired energy source through the existing gas pipeline system. To fully understand how hydrogen or a mixture of natural gas reacts with the materials used in gas pipelines, and to assess potential challenges such as embrittlement, degradation and long-term reliability, experimental tests were conducted. The tests included the preparation and application of five commercially available paints, which were subjected to various physical and electrochemical tests before and after exploitation in real systems of pure hydrogen and gas. Physical tests consisted of measuring the hardness, adhesion, gloss and shade of the coating, while the resistance of the coating was tested by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), during which the samples were immersed in 3.5 % NaCl aqueous solution at a temperature of 20 °C. The tested coatings improve mechanical and anticorrosive properties which means that they provide the good resistance to internal mechanical influences and effectively prevent corrosion and degradation of metal surfaces during exploitation in gas pipelines
