The construction of main pipelines makes major demands on welding technology. Conventional manual welding technology is able to keep up with these demands with increasing difficulty not only from the point of view of welded joints quality assurance but also from the aspects of economy, technology and metallurgy. Also needing to be stressed are the human and ecological components of the application of automatic welding, which come fully to the fore in particularly severe working conditions and along demanding routes, as well as in the preservation of the integrity of the construction during exploitation. Although there are constraints to the application of automatic welding, it is possible with the right equipment, power supply, organisation and logistics to achieve outstanding success in severe conditions of work. This paper describes the application of automatic electric arc welding in the welding of pipelines made of high strength steel, the comparative advantages of automatic welding and the necessary equipment also being listed, and the issue of welding of high strength pipeline steel is also briefly addressed. In addition, the experience and results of the use of automatic welding in the construction of the main gas-pipeline from Pula to Karlovac are presented.
