Sažetak

The bridge across the sea strait between the mainland and the Pelješac peninsula is to be built to establish the fixed road link between parts of Croatian territory, thus facilitating the development of Dubrovnik and all of the southern Croatia. Extensive offshore site investigations were carried out, including continuous shear wave survey and geotechnical explorations from a specially equipped drill ship, to obtain soil parameters for the design of bridge foundations. A site-specific seismic study was undertaken based on the seismic source zone characterization and attenuation relationships for the south of Croatia. Over ten different bridge types, including beams, trusses, arches and a cablestayed bridge, were investigated in the preliminary design and two of them, a steel box type beam and a cable stayed bridge over the navigation channel were proposed for the next design phase. The finally chosen solution is a continuous steel box type superstructure bridge of uniform depth, supported by concrete piers and abutments on deep tubular steel driven piles foundations.
