Sažetak

Frost and hail present some of the most significant threats to industrial agricultural crop cultivation. Therefore, greenhouse buildings are introduced in order to prevent any damage induced by the named natural factors. The high specific stiffness and strength of composite laminates, especially CFRP, could provide significant improvements when utilized as the greenhouse structural material. To design the composite greenhouse structure properly, i.e. unleash its full potential - its load bearing capabilities must be accurately predicted. Iterative numerical simulations (FEA) of hailstone impacts were performed using commercially viable software, implementing the user defined material model as VUMAT Fortran subroutine. Creation of the simulation model, including the scope of the structure analyzed, certain assumptions that have been made, boundary and loading conditions are described in detail. The failure criteria proposed by Raimondo et. al. (2012) for UD composites was used, while incorporating also the strain rate effect from the same work, along with the strain rate smoothing by averaging and simulating a low-pass filter. The results of iterative simulations have converged to a specific design, regarding the layup sequence and number of plies, which furthermore led to the conclusions made and stated in this work.
