Environmentally friendly solution for wastewater treatment
Sažetak
Water scarcity is one of the greatest threats facing humanity today. The world's water resources are decreasing dramatically. The available water resources will not be sufficient to cope with the increase in population. Given the importance of water, new technologies are being developed to ensure a balance between water supply and demand. Wastewater treatment is an important aspect of environmental sustainability. Bioremediation as an environmentally friendly method utilizes the ability of microorganisms to degrade, remove, stabilize and reduce environmental pollutants. The advantages of bioremediation techniques, particularly their cost effectiveness at various scales, simplicity of operation, process monitoring, and their less destructive properties to polluted sites during operation, are among the features that make bioremediation an environmentally sustainable technology for environmental management. In this work, bioremediation of highly contaminated leachate from biowaste was conducted under batch conditions using an indigenous microbial culture. During the experiment, substrate concentration, biomass and dissolved oxygen, and pH were determined. Based on the values of the estimated parameters of the model and the evaluation of the acceptance of the model, the Endo-Haldane model describes well the biodegradation process. The efficiency of the process under batch conditions was 90%.
