Brass couplings are widely used in the plumbing industry due to their durability and corrosion resistance, which is greatly influenced by its chemical composition. Copperzinc alloys containing more than 15% zinc are generally susceptible to dezincification. Dezincification selectively removes zinc from the alloy, leaving behind a porous, copper-rich structure that has reduced mechanical strength. It can occur as a uniform or localized process. In this paper, the case study on the cause of brass couplings damage in the water tank was conducted. Microstructural analysis revealed that couplings are damaged due to selective corrosion, type uniform-layer dezincification. SEM/EDX cross-section analysis of the brass coupling confirmed selective leaching in the form of dezincification.
