Sažetak

Schooling is a formal process of education which takes place in dedicated spaces under the direction of formally trained and approved teachers or trainers and which leads to formal recognition or accreditation. Since the late nineteenth century, most countries have adopted one or another form of compulsory schooling; these days, duration of compulsory schooling in most countries is 8–9 years. The main goal of compulsory schooling is the introduction of new generations into basic skills and social norms, including but not limited to participation in democratic processes. Schooling in capitalist societies is directly linked to employment, income, and social class. While the majority of world’s governments formally support the view of schooling as a vehicle for social mobility, it is a well-known fact that schooling is one of the main vehicles for social reproduction.
