Sažetak

This paper deals with the specific location of the Croatian territory with respect to climatic conditions (territory, temperatures and insulation, thermal protection requirements) and Croatian attitude to the World Conventions on Climate Change. Croatia is one of the signatories to the Kyoto-protocol. This paper deals with attempts on the part of Croatia to follow world trends in environmental protection. National programs launched with the aim of saving fossil-based energy sources and developing modes of application of renewable energy sources, stimulate further investigation of possible energy saving in all sectors of economy. The paper also presents the building construction typology in Croatia in relation to particular regions and informs about a new approach to design and building construction following new technical regulations based on the accepted European and international standardization. Sustainable architecture is the objective of many research and pilot projects of the built structures or those that are still in their preliminary stage. Emphasis is placed on a pilot project concerning an office block reconstruction with the results obtained after two-year monitoring of its use. Other examples of important pilot projects in Croatia are also mentioned.
