Sažetak

I develop my best ideas, and write my best texts, in solitude. My fragile attention is all too easily disrupted; peace and quiet help me gather my thoughts into a meaningful form. Most academics seem to feel similarly, and alone-time for activities such as book writing is institutionalized in various forms such as the sabbatical. Yet, being alone is very different from being lonely. The first implies freedom of disruptions, while the latter is the perceived involuntary lack of social connections, or more precisely, ‘a state of mind that encapsulates the cognitive or emotional appraisal of one’s social resources’ (Utz et al. 2014). While most of us desperately need more alone-time, it is hard to find a person who actively seeks loneliness. But the two are not distinguished easily… especially because spending extended periods of time alone seems to be crucial for creative work.
