Sažetak

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the frequency, duration, and intensity of physical activity (PA) with Body Mass Index (BMI) and dietary habits of students, as well as to determine whether there are gender differences. A total of 569 undergraduate and graduate students (F=231; M=338) from two higher education institutions in Zagreb participated in the study. Statistical analysis of the relationship between exercise frequency, duration, and intensity showed a weak but statistically significant correlation with the answers to a set of questions related to dietary habits. Students (both F and M) who are more engaged in PA consume more meals, fruits, vegetables, and protein-rich foods, take more dietary supplements, drink more water while consuming less juice and carbonated beverages, and have better digestion. The consumption of fast food, snacks, and coffee was not associated with participation in exercise. The analysis differentiating between genders revealed a statistically significant lower BMI in female students, who consume more vegetables, drink more coffee, and have better digestion. Male students exercise more frequently, for longer durations, and at higher intensities compared to their female colleagues. They drink more water, juice and carbonated beverages, eat more meals per day and consume more protein-rich foods as well as fast food. No gender differences were found in the consumption of fruits, snacks, or dietary supplements. The authors suggest introducing educational programs on the importance of regular physical activity and a well-balanced diet in maintaining overall health.
