Sažetak

Polyurethane (PUR) is a type of polymer in which organic units are joined by carbamate (urethane) links. Because of its durability, PUR is often used in protective coating systems as a topcoat, where it protects substrates from various types of defects such as corrosion, abrasion and deteriorating process. Polyurethane coatings are also known for their ability to adhere well to a wide variety of substrates in a broad range of temperatures. Some types of PUR coatings can also be applied as a one coat “direct to metal” system.
The aim of this paper is to determine corrosion properties and thermal stability of polyurethane coatings. Solvent-borne PUR coatings dried under atmospheric conditions and by infrared radiation were examined. Corrosion properties of the coatings were characterized using a salt spray chamber. In order to determine physical properties of tested coatings, pull-off adhesion and pencil tests were performed before and after the exposure to salt spray chamber. To assess thermal properties of PUR coatings, thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were performed. It was found that IR dried PUR coatings exhibit better physical and thermal properties.
