Sažetak

According to previous studies on the groundwater movement in karstic aquifers of Istrian peninsula a relatively small and mostly isolated drainage areas of particular springs were interpreted. More recent explorations, however, showed that drainage - spring relations are more complicated than previously assumed and hence stimulated the study of groundwater chemistry as additional method to interpret the groundwater movement and the possibility of environmental impact on the groundwater quality, both in respect to the parameters depicting its natural chemistry and those illustrating later modification due to anthropogenic impact. Importance and results of the method tested on the Gradole spring in Istria, Croatia are presented in this paper. The origin of groundwater was interpreted inrespect to its natural geochemistry while chemical modifications caused by anthropogenic impact illustrated the complexity of groundwater residence time relations and extent of regional groundwater communication. Additionally, it points to the fact that the more regional flows also contribute to the spring recharge.
