Career Paths of IT Project Managers: Exploring Generic Competencies and Progression Patterns

Vjeran Bušelić

Sažetak

This paper examines the career paths of IT project managers (PM) and the generic skills required. Based on a survey of 98 professionals in Croatia, the analysis shows that fewer respondents began their careers as junior PMs. In comparison, a larger number entered the field from either software development roles or entry-level non-technical positions. Once in project management, professionals typically remain in the role or progress to higher managerial positions. For junior PMs, the most important skills are rapid learning, teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability. For experienced PMs, the key competencies are problem-solving, motivating others and guiding teams toward shared goals.
