Algorithm Based on Cascade Control with PI Controllers for Water-Based Cooling System in Data Centre

Krešimir Osman, Trpimir Alajbeg, Vanja Jug

Sažetak

The paper presents a control algorithm for a water-based cooling system with a chiller and cooling tower in a data centre located within a commercial building. The control algorithm is implemented based on a mathematical model of the system. The system operates on the water-cooling principle and consists of two circuits. In the chilled-water circuit, the evaporator side supplies water at 18/26∘C for direct rack cooling within the data centre. In the second circuit, operating at 27/32 °C, heat is removed from the condenser side via a cooling tower. The control algorithm uses a cascade control architecture with both loops regulated by PI controllers. The paper also includes simulations using a combination of MATLAB Simulink and SimScape Fluids software tools for water outlet temperatures, as well as the coefficient of performance over time.
