Sažetak

The growing population increases the demand for materials and energy and generates an abundance of biowaste. Data on the quantity of biowaste and the dynamics of its generation are of crucial importance as they enable effective material or energy valorization. The physicochemical properties and biodegradability of the substrate are important for optimising biological treatment.
Analyses of databases and national reports on food consumption show that the composition of food and biowaste coincide with a correlation coefficient of 0.78. The coefficient of variation of monthly biowaste quantities from households (11%) and public green spaces (18%) shows a relatively even distribution. The coefficient of variation for the monthly biowaste quantities in the tourism sector is 129%, which can be attributed to pronounced seasonality. The proportion of biowaste or food waste from tourism is approx. 4.4% of the total amount of food waste due to the rational use of food and economic interest and therefore has no significant influence on the planning of biological treatment. As food waste accounts for 70 % of biowaste, the conditions for planning and designing plants for the biological treatment of biowaste are favourable. For smaller municipalities with a high proportion of tourism, however, careful planning of the plants is required.
