Flood protection project of the Sava River is planned an overall system of protection, which is underconstruction more than 30 years. The key position of the flood protection solution Central Posavina is thevery important area of Lonjsko Polje natural wetlands. The constructing of this system became a threat for Lonjsko Polje ecosystem, the largest protected wetland ara in Croatia with a total of 506 square kilometres. Completed works resulted in changes of natural characteristics, and by human activity the quality of water became worse. Lonjsko Polje was proclaimed a Nature Park in 1990, and new approach of the area became necessary. With integral approach, present flood protection plans are included in the complex physical planning, and in the process of planning measures in the environmental protection and sustainable development, they have more serious role than before.
