Sažetak

Compared to steels customary used in fabrication of dies, MARAGING steels have a number of advantages such as: excellent hardenability, good toughness, high resistance towards the thermal fatigue, simple heat treatment (“ distortionless” and without protective atmosphere), good machinability, fair weldability. Despite the listed advantages, the most serious objection to their usage is their low wear resistance, particularly if the die is subjected to extensive wear during its service. Feasibility of application of thermochemical processes in fabrication of dies is discussed. Using the samples of MARAGING steel 18-9-5 and 14-10-5, effects of carburizing , nitriding and boriding upon the wear resistance (abrasion, adhesion and erosion) have been tested. Results of testing indicate improved wear resistance if listed processes have been applied. However, if some of the processes are used, difficulties may arise regarding the change of dimensions and quality of surface layer.
