The paper addresses some nonsenses and other issues appearing during last two years in Croatian legal documents related to radiological and nuclear safety. This is illustrated by examples such as: - New Croatian basic law on radiological and nuclear safety defines radioactive substances as materials „containing, among other, atoms with unstable nuclei“. Although this includes practically all natural substances, the law prohibits addition of such substances to consumer products ; - The law translates the definition of special fissionable material from the Euratom Treaty retaining the obvious typing error which distorts its meaning ; - Croatian version of EC Directive 2013/59/Euratom translates the term “absorbed dose” as – when translated back to English – “intake dose”. The misleading implications are obvious. During the law adoption procedure, the authors of this paper provided comments on the above and other issues to the State office for radiological and nuclear safety, who was entrusted with the responsibility for drafting the document and producing the final proposal. Croatian radiological protection association and Croatian nuclear society also provided a number of comments aimed at improving the draft. Very few suggestions were accepted by the State office, so that many inadequate formulations were retained in the adopted regulation. Arguing that only high quality regulations can ensure radiological and nuclear safety, as well as maintain public confidence in the competence of the State, the authors suggest that the State office should take Croatian professional associations and societies far more seriously, consulting them from the very beginning of legal documents drafting and adoption procedure, and also ensure their participation in EU documents translation.
