Radical changes in contemporary society create undetermined open conditions that cause rapid obsolescence of buildings. The ability of a building to adapt to changed requirements during its life cycle becomes a fundamental quality of its sustainability. It is usually achieved by convergency of different layers of building, such as structure, envelope, services, and partitioning. In Western historic buildings, load bearing masonry structure forms the envelope of building at once. As contemporary buildings are often designed using framed structure, their envelopes become independent layer separating interior and exterior space. The envelope as independent layer is less permanent than the structure. But, since it represents an image of the building, it is recommendable to design it as a durable layer. In society encouraging constant change, the envelope as an enduring layer should support adaptability of the building. This paper analysed cases of envelope design that have enhanced buildings’ adaptability. As a result of research, principles for the design of the adaptable buildings’ envelopes were presented.
