Sažetak

The objective of this study was to determine the current state and appearance of the Zelena potkova, located in the downtown core of the city of Zagreb and created in the period of historicism (turn of the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries). Also, a comparison was made of the spatial and social aspects of its function in the past and today. The necessary data were acquired from the literature dealing with the history of downtown parks of the city of Zagreb and by fieldwork involving taking photographs. Investigation results have shown that the physical appearance of the area was changing with time, both with regard to the ground plan and introduction of new plant material and artefacts. The Zelena potkova has always had a showcase function, as befits the town center, but it was found that the citizens also demand various activities and events appropriate to the modern life style and use of open areas. It was concluded that the location and time when the Zelena potkova was formed determine its appearance and function. Its formal ground plan, symmetry and the representative function have been mainly retained. The social aspect is equally important in physical planning. As the city center, besides its business, commercial and tourist function, is also a residential part, recreation amenities and open areas should be provided for the residents near their homes. For esthethic and educational reasons, more diverse plant material should be introduced into open areas, at the same time following the historical matrix, notably when introducing dendrological material
