Thermodynamic parameters of cerium(III) chloride heptahydrate precipitation on the surface of aluminium alloy 2024-T3 in chloride solution
Sažetak
Corrosion protection of aluminium alloy AA2024-T3 has been studied in chloride solution with and without addition of cerium (III)-chloride heptahydrate. Inhibition efficiency as a function of concentration, temperature and various exposure periods of immersion into 0.01 M NaCl, containing 3 mM, 4 mM and 5 mM of CeCl3 X 7H2O, are investigated at 20 °C. The measurements were carried out using a potentiodynamic polarization method. Electrochemical parameters, which indicate the corrosion behavior of the aluminium in the NaCl solution without and in the presence of inhibitor, were calculated based on the experimental results. The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of adsorption process were determined. Values of equilibrium adsorption constant Kads and activation energy EA in the presence of inhibitor indicate type of adsorption of the cerium on the alloy surface. The formation of precipitates of Ce3+occurred on cathodic intermetallic sites and the surface in general resulted in improved corrosion resistance. Cerium (III)-chloride heptahydrate has been tested to be an effective corrosion inhibitor for AA2024-T3 in 0.01 M NaCl solution.
