Sažetak

This paper investigates the protective performance of Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor (VpCI®) M-126/3 incorporated in co-extruded polyethylene films in development phase aimed for the multi-metal corrosion protection. These films are commonly used for parts protection in the automotive industry. An example is General Motor’s Build Ahead Program for engine protection during warehousing and transport. The study was performed on polyethylene films of different thicknesses, that is, different corrosion inhibitor concentrations to determine the optimal protective thickness of the film for the protection of steel, aluminium, and copper in aggressive environment. Characterization of the polyethylene film containing M-126/3 VpCI® was done with Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX). Its mechanical properties were tested before and after UV chamber exposure. In order to evaluate the corrosion inhibiting protective performance of M-126/3, the polyethylene films were tested in humidity chamber. Results show an optimal film thickness with corrosion inhibitor for efficient corrosion protection of all tested materials i.e. carbon steel, aluminium, and copper parts, which are the main metal components of engines.
