Comparison of properties of waterborne and solventborne coatings
Sažetak
Many currently used anticorrosive coatings are not environmentally friendly because of their solvent emissions in the air. There is need for substitutes (or alternative techniques) which would have both performances, good corrosion protection and be environmentally acceptable. To achieve this, many researches have been conducted in order to find right formulation. One of the most interesting developments of new and environmentally friendly anticorrosion paints are waterborne paints without toxic (chromium and lead) components, which are expected to protect metals in different types of environments. In this work for determination of corrosion protection properties of waterborne paints salt spray test was used. The degradation of coatings is determined using the electrochemical techniques of quasi-potentiostatic polarization i.e. by recording polarization curves and by Tafel extrapolation. The physical parameters of coatings (wet and dry coating thickness, adhesion) are tested too. Accelerated test (salt spray test - very aggressive) showed that waterborne paint system has inferior anticorrosive properties than those which are solvent borne. Electrochemical tests showed that waterborne paint system has not good anticorrosive properties for immersed structures.
