The Effect of Stator Clamping Plate Design on End Region Power Losses of Vertical Hydro Generators
Sažetak
Magnetic flux of operating generator passes through active machine region, but also penetrates nearby mechanical parts. Clamping plates and finger plates that are used to tighten stator metal sheets are situated in such regions, and are inevitably exposed to magnetic field. That is why losses are also generated in these parts of electric machine. This paper describes practical problems related to clamping plates design and offers methods that can be used to reduce unwanted losses. Measurement of clamping plate losses on a real generator is difficult as it is hard to distinguish and separate these losses from total losses. That is the reason why in this paper losses analysis is done using finite element method calculations. By use of three dimensional generator model, comparison of losses was conducted for clamping plates made from magnetic material, nonmagnetic material and magnetic material shielded by copper screen. Results show that by use of nonmagnetic materials clamping plates losses can be minimized by a factor up to ten, while metal screen can reduce losses up to 30 %.
