A METHOD OF CHARACTERISTICS FOR ONE-DIMENSIONAL FLUID FLOW IN VISCOELASTIC TUBES
Sažetak
The blood flow in the human arterial tree, may be considered as one-dimensional flow in a network of visco-elastic blood vessels. An one-dimensional model is a good compromise between lumped and three-dimensional models. In case of an elastic vessel wall, the governing equations are of hyperbolic type, and can be solved by the method of characteristics. In case of a viscoelastic wall, equations are of elliptic type due to the term describing wall viscosity. Here we extend the method of characteristics to the case of a viscoelastic wall, with the wall viscosity term treated explicitly, through the source term. The developed method is stable and efficient as in a case of elastic model. The developed method of characteristics for a viscoelastic tube is physically clear and efficient as in the case of an elastic tube. For its application to the arterial tree it should be extended from a tube to the tree structure and it should be taken into account that the compliance depends on the pressure.
