Sažetak

A new self-oscillating antenna built by integrating a push-pull transistor oscillator in a rectangular opening inside a rectangular patch has been presented. The symmetrical patch design has the advantage of suppressing higher modes inside the patch resulting in lower cross-polarization levels. This spatial oscillator showed linear frequency change with bias voltage and a maximum EIRP of 24.4 dBm. The predicted and measured operating frequency agree very well.
The radiation patterns show no degradation in comparison to a non-modified patch. The cross-polarization levels in both E- and H-planes are low. Injection locking experiments show stable operation and acceptable FM noise levels throughout the tuning range. This compact and low cost design showed clean spectrum in the whole tuning range. Future work will be focused on building arrays of these active elements and investigating their power combining and beam scanning properties.
